Julio Daniel Martinez is a Boston Red Sox outfielder and designated hitter. The Houston Astros selected him in the 611th round of the amateur draft in 2009. Martinez has been named to the All-Star team four times and has won the Silver Slugger Award three times.



Martinez was selected in the sixth round of the 2006 Major League Baseball draft by the Minnesota Twins. He was a member of the Nova Southeastern University Sharks baseball team in college.

In 2009, he hit.428 with 15 home runs and 73 runs scored, setting a program record. Martinez was recognized at the North Dakota State University Hall of Fame in 2014.



Martinez was selected in the 20th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft by the Houston Astros. Greg Brown, who eventually became the head coach at NSU, signed him. Martinez has also played for the Corpus Christi Hooks and the Tri-City Valleycats of the Texas League.

Martinez was signed to a minor-league deal by the Detroit Tigers on March 24, 2014. Martinez and the Tigers avoided arbitration on January 16, 2015, when the two sides agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract for the 2015 season. Martinez was dealt with the Arizona Diamondbacks for Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcántara, and Jose King on July 18, 2017. Martinez signed a five-year, $110 million contract with the Boston Red Sox on February 26, 2018.
