For Mark Melancon and Kyle Weiland, he was traded to the Houston Astros on December 14, 2011. On February 8, 2012, the Astros and Lowrie reached an agreement on a one-year, $1.15 million contract with performance and award bonuses.

When he requested $1.5 million in compensation from the Astros, they offered him $900,000. In the event that Lowrie had taken the case to court, he would not have been entitled to any bonuses.

Chris Carter, Brad Peacock, and Max Stassi were traded to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Lowrie and Fernando Rodriguez on February 4, 2013. Josh Reddick, a former Red Sox teammate, was reunited with him after the trade.

As a result of Hiroyuki Nakajima’s inability to play and his injury, Lowrie was moved from second base to shortstop, where he remained throughout the 2013 season.
