Jessica Michelle Chastain was born in Sacramento, California, and grew up in a middle-class family in a Northern California neighborhood.
Her mother, Jerri Chastain, is a vegan cook from Kansas, and her stepfather is a firefighter. She began dancing at the age of nine and was a member of a dance ensemble by the age of thirteen. She began appearing in Shakespearean plays all across the Bay Area.
Chastain’s passion for acting began at a young age, and she made her professional theatrical debut in 1998 as Shakespeare’s Juliet.
She was signed to a talent holding agreement with television producer John Wells after studying acting at the Juilliard School. She appeared as a recurrent guest star on various television shows, including Law & Order:
Special Victims Unit. She also appeared onstage in Anton Chekhov’s drama The Cherry Orchard in 2004 and Oscar Wilde’s tragedy Salome in 2006.
