As per sources, he was depressed and committed himself by lighting a gas fire.

June thought she was to fault for forgetting to pay the gas meter.

“I came into the bedroom and there was Johnny, lying on the bed, the gas fire pushed up next to him,” she claimed in an interview with the sun.

In the late 1950s, suicide was still considered a criminal offense. I was able to resuscitate him, but he only lived three days in the hospital before passing away on May 8.”
