English teacher, sportscaster, and reporter Richard John Gwynne lived from 23 April 1945 to 9 July 2022.



He was born in Shropshire in 1945 and moved to Manchester in 1957. He attended Chorlton Grammar School, and after graduating, he entered the teaching profession. At Moston Brook High School in Manchester, he oversaw the English department and served as the Deputy Housemaster.

His son Andrew is the Labour representative for Denton and Reddish in Greater Manchester.



He had supported Manchester City F.C. for his entire life. At the age of 77, he passed away from cancer on July 9th, 2022.

Gwynne began his career in Manchester as a teacher. Gwynne was a toastmaster and an after-dinner speaker. Additionally, he organized regional darts competitions and MC’d darts exhibitions in the Manchester region.

He began working as the announcer for Lancashire County Cricket Club at the beginning of the 2019 campaign.

For 31 years, he penned a monthly column called “The Mancunian Way” for Darts World Magazine (previously known as Piccadilly Line), and at one point, he was in charge of “ghostwriting” Wayne Mardle’s column, Wayne’s World, in the same publication. He spent close to 30 years covering local darts in the North West newspapers as well. In 2011, he stopped doing both.

He served as the chairman of the Manchester Superleague and Manchester Log-End Federation, which he established in 2003 to prevent the extinction of the log-end dartboard.

He was a commentator for the Six-a-Side World Cup competitions for the International Socca Federation.

He published his autobiography, “Soccer Satisfied,” in September 2020 with David Mitchell and Jeff Stelling writing the foreword.
