Since August 24, 2021, Kathy Hochul, real name Kathleen Courtney Hochul, has been the 57th governor of New York. She is an American lawyer and politician. She is the first female governor of New York and the first from upstate New York since the 1930s. She is also a member of the Democratic Party.

On August 27, 1958, she was born in Buffalo, New York. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School in 1980 and a Juris Doctor from the Catholic University Columbus School of Law in 1984 before becoming politically active during her college years there.

Hochul was appointed Erie County clerk in 2007 after having previously served on the Hamburg municipal board and as the deputy county clerk. She was re-elected in 2010 to serve another full term as the clerk of Erie County. To replace the vacancy left by the resignation of then-Representative Chris Lee, Hochul won a four-candidate special election in May 2011 for New York’s 26th congressional district, becoming the district’s first Democrat in 40 years. From 2011 to 2013, she was a representative for the United States.

After the district’s boundaries and demographics were altered during the decennial reapportionment process, Chris Collins defeated her for reelection in 2012. Hochul later worked for the Buffalo-based M&T Bank as a government relations executive. She is competing against Republican nominee and U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin for a full term in 2022.
