Wong, a native of Hilo, Hawaii, was a baseball standout at Kamehameha Hawaii High School and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Wong was drafted first overall in the 2011 Major League Baseball draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, and he was promoted to the majors two years later.
