Before running for office as an MP, he worked as a financial analyst and a columnist for The Daily Telegraph. Kwarteng was named the Department for Exiting the European Union’s Under-Secretary of State in November 2018.

Kwarteng was promoted to the position of Minister of State for Business, Energy, and Clean Growth in July 2019 when Boris Johnson was chosen as the new prime minister. This duty included attending cabinet meetings.

Kwarteng received a promotion to Business Secretary in January 2021. When Johnson announced his resignation in 2022, Kwarteng supported Liz Truss’s bid to become the Conservative Party’s leader.

Kwarteng was named Chancellor of the Exchequer after Truss was chosen as Prime Minister.
Kwarteng unveiled a “mini-budget” on September 23 that included a number of tax cuts, which garnered harsh criticism and briefly caused the value of the sterling in relation to the US dollar to drop to an all-time low.

Kwarteng served as Chancellor for barely 38 days until being dismissed on October 14.
After Iain Macleod, who passed away while in office, he had the second-shortest tenure of any chancellor appointed after World War II. Jeremy Hunt succeeded Kwarteng.
