The Oakland Athletics selected Olson in the first round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft after he graduated with honors from high school in 2012.

He had previously pledged to play collegiate baseball for Vanderbilt University, but he finally opted to forego his commitment to the Commodores and sign with the Oakland Athletics instead.
