Matthew Ryan Sokol, a tight end for the New England Patriots of the National Football League, was born on November 9, 1995. He was a Michigan State football player in college. He signed as an undrafted free agent and joined the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020, where he earned his first roster berth. The Patriots acquired Sokol in 2022.
Following the 2019 NFL Draft on April 27, Sokol signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent. On August 31, 2019, he was released as part of the team’s final roster trim, and the following day, he was added to the practice squad. On September 18, he was let go, and on October 1, he rejoined the practice squad. On October 9, 2019, he was released once more.
On November 18, 2019, Sokol joined the practice squad of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
On December 31, 2019, Sokol and the Detroit Lions agreed to a reserve/future contract. He was released during the final roster cuts on September 5, 2020, then on October 21, 2020, he was added to the team’s practice squad. After three days, he was freed.
On October 31, 2020, Sokol re-signed with the practice squad of the Los Angeles Chargers. On December 26, he was added to the active roster in preparation for the team’s Week 16 matchup against the Denver Broncos. He was then demoted to the practice squad following the game. On January 1st, 2021, he was elevated to the active roster.
Sokol was released by the Chargers on August 31, 2021. On September 2, 2021, Sokol re-signed with the practice squad of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Sokol joined the Detroit Lions on January 12, 2022, under a reserve/future contract. On May 10, 2022, he was released.
The New England Patriots picked up Sokol off waivers on May 11, 2022.
