The New York Safe Act (NY SAFE Act), a piece of legislation regulating firearms that were approved by the New York State Senate on January 14, 2013, and went on to become law, was not subject to Zeldin’s vote.

Because he was on Army Reserve duty in Virginia at the time, he was absent from the voting. After the voting, he made a statement that was made public to the press in which he claimed that he would have voted against the legislation.

In February of 2014, Zeldin presented a bill to the legislature that aimed to put a halt to the implementation of the Common Core curriculum for a period of three years.

In March of 2014, Zeldin cast a vote against the New York Dream Act, which would have made it possible for undocumented students in the state who satisfied the standards for in-state tuition to receive financial help to pursue higher education.
