From 1991 to 1993, Leahy was a midfielder on the St. Louis University (SLU) soccer team. While attending SLU, he played under coach Ken Lolla and helped SLU reach four NCAA championship soccer finals in 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995. While at SLU Leahy won three national championships and was named an All-American.
