Patrick Lavon Mahomes II is an American football quarterback for the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs. He played collegiate football and baseball at Texas Tech University and he is the son of former Major League Baseball pitcher Pat Mahomes.

After his sophomore year, he decided to give up baseball in order to focus on football full-time. Ahead of all NCAA Division, I FBS players his junior year, he tallied 5,052 throwing yards and 32 total touchdowns. The Kansas City Chiefs selected him with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

In his debut season, Mahomes was Alex Smith’s back-up quarterback. When Smith was traded to the Redskins, he was named the starting quarterback for the Chiefs in 2018. Mahomes passed for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions that season.

Patrick became the only quarterback who has ever thrown for more than 5,000 yards in both college and the NFL at the same time. It was he and Peyton Manning that threw 50 touchdown passes and 5,000 yards in one season, respectively, in the NFL.

Debut Team All-Pro and NFL Offensive Player of the Year accolades were given to him for his achievements in his first season as a starter. Mahomes is one of only four black quarterbacks to earn the AP MVP award.
