His parents were accountants Martha Woodruff Redford (née Hart; 1914-1955) and Charles Robert Redford (1914-1991). He was born in Santa Monica on August 18, 1936.

William, a half-brother from his father’s first marriage, is his only living sibling. Redford’s background is a mix of British and Irish.

When Elisha Redford married Mary Ann McCreery at Manchester Cathedral in 1849, they moved to Stonington, Connecticut, where they raised their three children.

A boy, Charles, was born to them, and he was the first in line to be given the name. Maternal lineage: The Harts were Galway-based; the Greens were Scottish-Irish who arrived in the 18th century.

While Redford’s father worked in El Segundo, his family relocated to Van Nuys, Los Angeles. Don Drysdale was a classmate of Robert’s at Van Nuys High School in Los Angeles.

A self-described “poor” student who found inspiration outside of the classroom and was passionate about art and sports, he has admitted to this. To get warmed up, he went to the Los Angeles Tennis Club and played tennis with Pancho Gonzales.

James would not only look like his father, but he would also go on to have a successful career as a documentary filmmaker and activist.

The Redford Center was founded in 2005 by Redford’s father and son to “impact-driven cinema and media to catalyze the movement toward environmental justice, protection, and repair,” according to their website.

Sadly, Redford’s second son James would succumb of liver cancer in 2020. He was only 58 years old at the time.
