Robert Redford is an American actor, director and producer. He is the recipient of various accolades, including an Academy Award from four nominations, a British Academy Film Award, two Golden Globe Awards, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2014, Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
His parents were accountants Martha Woodruff Redford (née Hart; 1914-1955) and Charles Robert Redford (1914-1991). He was born in Santa Monica on August 18, 1936.
William, a half-brother from his father’s first marriage, is his only living sibling. Redford’s background is a mix of British and Irish.
When Elisha Redford married Mary Ann McCreery at Manchester Cathedral in 1849, they moved to Stonington, Connecticut, where they raised their three children.
A boy, Charles, was born to them, and he was the first in line to be given the name. Maternal lineage: The Harts were Galway-based; the Greens were Scottish-Irish who arrived in the 18th century.
While Redford’s father worked in El Segundo, his family relocated to Van Nuys, Los Angeles. Don Drysdale was a classmate of Robert’s at Van Nuys High School in Los Angeles.
A self-described “poor” student who found inspiration outside of the classroom and was passionate about art and sports, he has admitted to this. To get warmed up, he went to the Los Angeles Tennis Club and played tennis with Pancho Gonzales.

Redford and Lola were keen to start a family soon after they wed. Lola and Scott Redford welcomed their first child, Scott Anthony Redford, one year later.
Sadly, his little life was cut short by SIDS just two months later. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), also known as cot death or crib death, is a debilitating illness.
When a baby under a year old dies unexpectedly, it is known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). For the death of an infant to be classified as the syndrome, an inquiry and autopsy must reveal no cause of death.
Shauna Redford, Robert Redford’s second child, was born on November 15, 1960, at the age of two. Even though her father and other siblings were devoted to film, she would go on to become a great artist in her own right.
Her husband, journalist Eric Schlosser, is also a prolific painter. Redford now has two great-grandchildren: Mica and Conor, born in 1985 after their wedding.
James would not only look like his father, but he would also go on to have a successful career as a documentary filmmaker and activist.
The Redford Center was founded in 2005 by Redford’s father and son to “impact-driven cinema and media to catalyze the movement toward environmental justice, protection, and repair,” according to their website.
Sadly, Redford’s second son James would succumb of liver cancer in 2020. He was only 58 years old at the time.
