She was born in Panama’s Canal Zone, according to her early life. Gary and Mona (O’Neil) Steele have a daughter named Steele. Her mom Mona is of Irish and Italian ancestry, according to reports. Sage Steele was born in the Panama Canal Zone to an American Army family.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in sports communication from Indiana University Bloomington, where she graduated in 1995.

From 1995 until 1997, she worked as a broadcaster. Her first television sports reporting job was at WSBT-TV in South Bend, Indiana, a CBS affiliate. From 1997 to 1998, she worked as a weekend morning sports anchor and weekday reporter for CBS affiliate WISH-TV in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Steele was suspended on October 5, 2021, by ESPN for remarks she reportedly made on Jay Cutler’s September 29 podcast about COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
