He began 2017 with the Stockton Ports and was promoted to the Midland RockHounds in June; in 98 games with both organizations, he batted.250 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs.

He spent the most of 2018 with Midland, slashing.288/.358/.498 in 68 games with eight home runs and 43 RBIs.

At the end of the year, he also appeared in three games for the Nashville Sounds. He started the year with the Las Vegas Aviators, where he hit the first home run in the history of the Las Vegas Ballpark.

Murphy’s contract was selected by the Athletics on September 1, 2019, and he was promoted to the major leagues. Murphy blasted his first career home run and first hit against Jake Jewell on September 4 in his MLB debut.

Murphy spent much of the 2020 season as the A’s catcher, appearing in 43 games. He had a.233 batting average with seven home runs and 14 RBI.

On November 7, 2021, Murphy received his first Gold Glove Award.
