After high school, he didn’t get drafted and ended up playing baseball for the University of Houston Cougars instead. Romero competed in 22 games and started eight of them as a rookie at Houston in 2015.

He had a 7–4 record, a 1.94 ERA, 92 strikeouts, and seven saves in 92 innings of work. He was suspended indefinitely for “behavior detrimental to the team” prior to his sophomore season in 2016, which was characterized in the media as a lack of physical conditioning.

After serving his two-game suspension, he returned to the field and made 13 starts in 15 appearances, all of which he credits to Houston strength and conditioning coach Ryan Deatrick for helping him lose weight. In the end, he had a record of 6–4 with an earned run average of 2.29 and 113 strikeouts.
