When Romero was named to the Nationals’ early camp roster for spring training of 2018, they had him ranked as their fifth-best prospect prior to that year.

But on March 5, he was ordered to leave camp for allegedly breaking team rules. For the Class-A South Atlantic League’s Hagerstown Suns, he was reinstated and assigned on June 6.

However, Romero made just seven appearances and had Tommy John surgery at the end of August 2018 to end his season early. Consequently,

Romero did not suit up for the 2019 campaign. A non-roster member of the Nationals’ 60-man player pool was announced on June 28th, 2020, by the Nationals.

The Nationals picked the contract of left-handed reliever Romero and promoted him to the major league roster for a game against the New York Mets on August 13, 2020.
