Sonny Barger, also known as Ralph Hubert Barger, was an American outlaw biker, author, and actor who joined the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club in Oakland, California, in 1957.

On October 8, 1938, Ralph Hubert Barger was born in Modesto, California. When Barger was four months old, his mother left the family, leaving his grandmother and his alcoholic father to raise him and his older sister Shirley.

He frequently fought with other boys and was frequently suspended from school while he was a child in Oakland for attacking teachers.

He left school after the ninth grade. Barger, who worked at a grocery shop and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of sixteen in 1955 as many of his schoolmates became drug addicts, was given an honorable discharge fourteen months later when it was found that he had falsified his birth certificate in order to join.

After leaving the Army, Barger worked a variety of low-paying jobs and shared a hotel room with his father. Later, he moved in with his sister and her kids.

In 1956, Barger became a member of the Oakland Panthers, his first motorcycle club.

After that club split, he began riding with another group of motorcyclists, one of whom, Don “Boots” Reeves, wore a patch that belonged to a long-gone motorcycle club in North Sacramento.

The patch featured a miniature skull wearing an aviator cap surrounded by a set of wings.
