Stormzy is a British rapper who was born Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr. on July 26, 1993. His Wicked Skengman series of freestyles over classic grime beats won him notoriety in the UK underground music scene in 2014.
After launching a campaign to achieve Christmas number one, Stormzy’s song “Shut Up,” which was originally published as a freestyle on YouTube, got successful and peaked at number eight on the UK Singles Chart. Stormzy was selected an artist to watch in the BBC’s Sound of 2015 list after winning Best Grime Act at the MOBO Awards in 2014 and 2015.
Gang Signs & Prayer (2017), his debut album, was the first grime album to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart and won British Album of the Year at the 2018 Brit Awards. Stormzy’s first UK number-one single, “Vossi Bop,” was released in 2019, and his headline performance at the 2019 Glastonbury Festival was hailed; he wore a Union Jack stab vest designed by Banksy, in response to the spike in knife crime in London. Heavy Is the Head, his second album, was released on December 13, 2019.
