Thomas Garner Biography
Thomas Garner, who was born in 1839 and died on April 30, 1906, was a notable Victorian English Gothic revival architect. His almost 30-year collaboration with architect George Frederick Bodley is well-known.
Thomas Garner was born at Wasperton Hill Farm in Warwickshire and grew up in a rural environment that instilled in him an inherent love of country crafts and construction that was never lessened by years spent in London.
At the age of 17, Thomas Garner was apprenticed to the architect Sir Gilbert Scott. George Frederick Bodley, one of his immediate predecessors at “Scott’s,” was already establishing his reputation. Two people built a warm bond.
When he returned to Warwickshire, Garner worked as a representative of Scott on a variety of local projects, including the repair of the Lord Leycester Hospital’s old chapel, which he buttressed into security.
On October 6, 1866, Garner wedded Rose Emily Smith. In 1868, he returned to London to assist his friend Bodley, and at their office at 7 Gray’s Inn Square, they began a long and profitable association. From 1867 through 1893, Garner resided at 20 Church Row, Hampstead.
In 1898 Garner was received into the Roman Catholic Church, and his partnership with Bodley was dissolved for fear that this might harm the latter’s business.
