The 2nd congressional district in Hawaii was represented by American politician Tulsi Gabbard from 2013 until 2021. She also works as a political commentator and US Army Reserve officer. She received a plurality of 43% of the vote in the 2002 Democratic primary, which had four candidates, to represent Hawaii’s 42nd House of Representatives district.

Afterwards, she defeated Republican Alfonso Jimenez in the general election by garnering 60.7% of the vote. She was elected to the state legislature of Hawaii at the age of 21, making history as the state’s youngest legislator and the youngest woman ever to hold that position. She won a unanimous vote in January 2013 to become the Democratic National Committee’s vice chair for a four-year term.

At a ceremony held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in October 2015, she was elevated from the rank of captain to major. She started a petition in July 2016 to stop the nomination process for the Democratic Party’s superdelegates. She offered her support to several Republican candidates for election in October 2022.
