Tyrann Devine Mathieu was born on May 13, 1992, and currently plays for the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs as Safety. He was a Louisiana State University college football player.
He earned a reputation for forcing turnovers during his college career, setting a Southeastern Conference record with 11 careers forced fumbles and earning the nickname “the Honey Badger” after the animal.
Mathieu is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and attended St. Augustine High School, where he played high school football for the St. Augustine Purple Knights. As a senior, he amassed 32 tackles, five interceptions, one sack, and one fumble recovery.
He was named a consensus All-American after his sophomore season, won the Chuck Bednarik Award as college football’s greatest defensive player, and was a Heisman Trophy nominee. Mathieu was removed from the Louisiana State University football program following that season for violating team rules.
After a year away from football in 2012, he was picked in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, reuniting him with former college colleague Patrick Peterson in the defensive backfield.
He was named to the PFWA’s All-Rookie Team as a rookie. He was invited to the 2015 Pro Bowl and was named first-team All-Pro. He also spent time with the Houston Texans.
