His father, James Guarantano, played wide receiver at Rutgers from 1989 to 1992. He was eventually inducted into the Rutgers Hall of Fame and went on to play in the National Football League and the Canadian Football League.



During his time in high school, Guarantano amassed a total of 3,028 passing yards and 28 touchdowns while also rushing for 523 yards and scoring 12 times.

In 2016, Under Armour named him to their All-America squad, and he was also named to the All-Bergen County First Team.

Coming out of high school, he was rated as a four-star recruit and ranked among the top four dual-threat quarterbacks in the country.

After considering more than 40 scholarship offers from various other programs, he chose to attend the University of Tennessee.
