Jim Palmer, a pitcher with the Baltimore Orioles, won his 20th game of the year on September 26, 1971, making him the fourth Orioles pitcher to win 20 games during the 1971 season.

Because of this, the Orioles pitching staff in 1971 became the first since the Chicago White Sox staff in 1920 to feature four pitchers who won 20 games for their teams.

Jack Chesbro, Ed Walsh, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, Joe McGinnity, Smoky Joe Wood, Pete Alexander, Cy Young, Jim Bagby, Jack Coombs, Lefty Grove, Denny McLain, and Dizzy Dean are the 13 pitchers in the history of Major League Baseball who have won 30 games in a single season. The Orioles now have six numbers that have been completely retired: 4, 5, 20, 22, and 33. These numbers were worn by Earl Weaver, Brooks Robinson, Cal Ripken Jr., Frank Robinson, and Jim Palmer, respectively (Eddie Murray).

McLain achieved a record of 31–6 during the 1968 season, making him the most recent pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball to win 30 or more games in a single season. During the 20th century, only 11 men were able to accomplish this feat.
