James David Andrews, a center in American football for the National Football League’s New England Patriots, was born on July 10, 1992. He participated in Georgia’s collegiate football program. Dan Reeves, a former player for the Dallas Cowboys, head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, and a member of the Denver Broncos, was his uncle.
Andrews was not selected in the 2015 NFL Draft, but on May 8, 2015, he signed a free-agent contract with the New England Patriots. Due to injuries to starting center Bryan Stork and backup center/guard Ryan Wendell, he played more preseason games than was anticipated and stood out throughout Patriot training camp.
After Stork was placed on injured reserve with the option to return and Wendell was inactive, Andrews was added to the 2015 Patriots 53-man roster and started at center against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1. Andrews played every snap during the first half of the season, starting every game through Week 10.
Andrews placed in the top two in the fan votes for the position despite not being chosen for the 2016 Pro Bowl. Andrews extended his deal with the Patriots for a further three years through the 2020 campaign on May 12, 2017. The contract has a basic value of $9.6 million, a signing bonus of $1.6 million, and incentives totaling an extra $2.1 million. Andrews was appointed Patriots captain for the first time in his career on September 5, 2017. Andrews started 17 of the Patriots’ 19 games, including their Super Bowl LII defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles.
For the Patriots in 2018, Andrews once more started every game at center. After the Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs, Andrews assisted them in getting to their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance. In Super Bowl LIII, they defeated the Los Angeles Rams by a score of 13-3. Andrews recovered a fumble in the triumph.
Andrews’ 2019 season is in peril when it was announced on August 26 of this year that he has a pulmonary embolism. On August 31, 2019, he was placed on a season-ending injured reserve.
Andrews made a comeback to the Patriots’ starting lineup in 2020 after sitting out all of 2019. He had thumb surgery, and on September 26, 2020, he was put on an injured reserve. On October 24, he was made active.
Andrews re-signed with the Patriots on March 22, 2021, for a period of four years.
