Lionel Richie had his high school education at Joliet Township High School, East Campus in Joliet, Illinois, after which he enrolled at Tuskegee Institute where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics in the 1960s.

Whiles in Tuskegee, he formed a succession of R&B groups. In 1968, he became part of the Commodores where he became a singer and saxophonist. The Commodores signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records in 1968 for one record before moving on to Motown Records.

Before Lionel got into music, he had intentions of going to study divinity to become a priest in the Episcopal Church where he was baptised, but he felt he was not a priest material which made him change his mind and pursue music.

Lionel is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, which is a national honour fraternity for band members and is also an active life member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
