After high school, Phil enrolled at the University of Wisconsin. He was first introduced to Texas Hold’ em during his time there, and he frequently played against his peers in the student union.

He became addicted to the game almost immediately and began entering other competitions in the area in order to increase his chances of winning even more money. He competed against physicians, business executives, and other rich players, all of whom he easily beat.

He decided to drop out of college and move to Las Vegas once he started making a decent amount of money. With such a limited bankroll, it wouldn’t be long until he ran out of money.

He had no alternative but to return to Wisconsin and work at Blaine Farms to supplement his income. He would do anything on the farm, from tilling the soil to detasseling the crops.

He’d return to Las Vegas after he’d saved up enough money, for as long as his bankroll would allow.

He’d go through this procedure multiple times before he was able to make enough stable money to make Las Vegas his permanent home.
