Samuel Thomas Hunter Clay (born June 21, 1993) is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Washington Nationals. In 2021, he made his MLB debut.

Clay went to Buford High School, which is located in Buford, Georgia.

He enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets baseball team.

Clay was taken in the fourth round of the 2014 MLB draft as a draft-eligible sophomore by the Minnesota Twins.

From 2014 through 2019, Clay pitched in the Twins minor league system. He was a non-roster invitee to Minnesota’s 60-man player pool in 2020, working out at CHS Field in St. Paul’s alternate training location.

Clay was never signed to a big – roster by the Twins, and after the 2020 season, he became a minor league free agency.

Clay was signed to a major league contract by the Washington Nationals on November 18, 2020, making him a member of a major league squad for the first time in his career.

Clay got promoted to the big leagues for the first time on April 6, 2021.

The next day, he made his MLB debut against the Atlanta Braves, pitching a scoreless inning.
