Shireen Abu Akleh was a journalist who worked as a reporter for the TV channel, Al Jazeera. She was of Palestinian-American descent and was working with Al Jazeera for 25 years.

Shireen was born in Jerusalem in 1971 to an Arab Christian family from Bethlehem. She attended secondary school in Beit Hanina. When she completed, she first enrolled at the Jordan University of Science and Technology where she architecture.

Shireen later got a transfer to Yarmouk University in Jordan where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in print journalism. She moved back to Palestine after her university studies where she worked for Radio Monte Carlo and Voice of Palestine.

In 1997, she left radio and started working as a journalist for Al Jazeera as a reporter. She often reported on major events related to Palestine including the Second Intifada and covered Israeli politics. She was present at a raid which the Israeli military stated was targeted at capturing “terror suspects”.

It was during this raid that Shireen was shot and killed by Israeli forces on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, while reporting on Israel Defense Forces(IDF) raids in Jenin. The journalist was shot in the head by the IDF and was rushed to Ibn Sina Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
