Hansjörg Wyss, a philanthropist, founded the Wyss Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C.

The foundation, which was founded in 1998, has supported environmental journalism, education, museums, and progressive political action.

Hansjörg Wyss and the Wyss Foundation have donated more than $450 million to help save nearly 40 million acres of public lands and waters as of 2018.

The Wyss Foundation had more than $2 billion in assets as of 2015.


According to the Foundation Center, the group donated $83.6 million in 2014. In 2015, $35.3 million in grants were awarded.


Wyss provided $2.5 million between 2006 and 2010 to retire oil and gas leases covering 110,000 acres of public land along the Rocky Mountain Front.

The foundation donated $12.5 million to The Nature Conservancy in 2008, and another $35 million in 2009–2010 to fund The Nature Conservancy’s “Montana Legacy Project,” which aims to protect 310,000 acres of timberland in Montana.

Environmental journalism, children’s education, and health programs have all been supported by the Wyss Foundation.

The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, the Constitutional Accountability Center, and Health Leads are among the organizations that have received support from the organization.

The organization gave $385,000 to the Society of Environmental Journalists in the mid-2010s to help them develop new environmental journalism posts for High Country News and the Los Angeles Times.

From 2014 to 2017, the group made annual contributions to Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families.


The organization has given to the Beyeler Foundation, a Riehen, Switzerland-based art museum, and offered cash towards a proposed extension of the museum in 2016.

Global Fishing Watch, a five-year research largely funded by Wyss, was published in Science in 2.018.
