They won the American League West for the second year in a row and concluded the season with the best record in baseball. Following an ALCS victory against the Toronto Blue Jays in five games, the Oakland Athletics went on to sweep the San Francisco Giants in a World Series.
The A’s finished the year as the top club in the league, going 99-63, the highest mark in baseball history. They held a seven-win advantage over the second-place Kansas City Royals, who had the best record in the league.
Additionally, Oakland was unbeatable in the playoffs. With a commanding 4-1 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS, the Oakland A’s clinched the championship.
The A’s benefited greatly from playing the first two games of the series at the Coliseum. Mark McGwire and Dave Henderson both hit home runs to help Oakland’s Dave Stewart to the victory in game one, which the A’s won 7-3. The Oakland A’s beat Toronto 6-3 in game two, with Mike Moore as the winning pitcher and Dennis Eckersley as the saver.
The 1989 Season saw the Oaklands Athletics win the World Series Title, the AL Pennant, and the West Division Title.
