Nelson Piquet is a Brazilian retired racing driver and businessman. Piquet, a three-time World Champion, has been voted among the best drivers to compete in Formula One (F1) since he retired from the sport. These rankings can be found in a variety of motorsports polls.
Piquet had a brief career in tennis until he lost interest in the sport. After that, he switched his focus to karting and concealed his name so that his father wouldn’t find out about his newfound passion.
In 1971 and 1972, he won the Brazilian national karting championship, and in 1976, he took first place in the Formula Vee championship.
Piquet proceeded to Europe on the recommendation of Emerson Fittipaldi, where he achieved even greater success by breaking the record for the most wins in Formula Three in 1978, so surpassing Jackie Stewart’s previous all-time record.
During the same year, he competed in Formula One for the Ensign team, as well as for McLaren and Brabham. Piquet made the transfer to the Brabham squad in 1979, where he finished in second place in 1980 and then won the championship the following year, 1981.
Piquet’s performance in 1982 was negatively impacted by significant engine unreliability; nonetheless, he experienced a comeback in 1983 and won his second world title.
