Hennes started his professional career as a footballer after he played for the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft but was always placed on the bench as a substitute for veteran quarterback Chad Pennington.
On July 26, 2008, Chad agreed to a four-year, $3.5 million contract with Miami Dolphins and played his NFL debut with 9:42 left; down 31–3 against the Arizona Cardinals.
