In 2009, he resigned as a director of Hotcourses Ltd., although he kept 48% of the company’s shares in a trust for his own benefit.

As a result of the sale of Hotcourses, which took place in January of 2017, he amassed a profit of more than 14 million pounds and became the richest Cabinet member.

In addition, the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards opened an investigation into him that same year (2009).

Following the discovery that he had in fact broken the rules, he made an offer to reimburse in excess of 9,500-pound sterling.

In 2010, the year when the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats came together to create a coalition government, he was appointed to the position of Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media, and Sport.

On May 13, 2010, as a direct result of this, he was appointed to the position of Privy Councillor.
