In the reorganization of Cameron’s cabinet that took place in July 2007, he was given the position of Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport.

Following the discovery that he had in fact broken the rules, he made an offer to reimburse in excess of 9,500-pound sterling.
In 2010, the year when the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats came together to create a coalition government, he was appointed to the position of Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media, and Sport.
On May 13, 2010, as a direct result of this, he was appointed to the position of Privy Councillor.
