Spencer Howard is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Texas Rangers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played in MLB for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Born in San Luis Obispo, Howard spent his early years growing up in Templeton. He was a multi-sport player at Templeton High School, but he was encouraged by the coach to stay on the baseball team.
After a fall audition, he made the Cal Poly Mustangs baseball team despite receiving no scholarship offers to play college baseball.
For his rookie year, Howard was allowed to sit out, allowing him to work on his strength and pitching velocity.
To further sharpen his pitching chops, Howard played two seasons of professional summer baseball with the Western Collegiate Baseball Association’s Bellingham Bells. By 2017, he was the starting pitcher for the Mustangs.
To improve his pitching mechanics, Howard was sent to the Class A Short-Season Williamsport Crosscutters in 2017 by the Philadelphia Phillies in the second round of the MLB Draft.
This year, he was sent to Lakewood BlueClaws, Class A Lakewood BlueClaws, to pitch the first playoff no-hitter in franchise history.
