Manchester United has extended Bruno Fernandes’ contract.

The new contract for the playmaker extends until June 2026, with a one-year extension option.

“I have enjoyed a special bond with Manchester United and our fantastic fans since the day I joined,” Fernandes said on the club’s official website.

According to The Athletic, the 27-year-new old’s contract doubles his existing salary.

Fernandes is claimed to be earning around £240,000 each week, which corresponds to a salary of around £12.5 million per year.

According to a recent report by L’Equipe, that is still less than Cristiano Ronaldo, David de Gea, Jadon Sancho, and Raphael Varane make.

Since joining Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, Fernandes has made an immediate impression at Old Trafford.

The Portugal international has 35 goals and 25 assists in his first 78 Premier League games.

However, not everyone was convinced by United’s decision to give Fernandes a new deal that included a significant pay increase.

“Bruno Fernandes’ contract issue is a fascinating one and very much sums up where Manchester United is at the moment,” former Arsenal and England player Paul Merson told Sportskeeda.

“I’m not saying he’s a horrible player, but how can they give someone a five-year contract when they don’t even have a regular manager?”

Portugal overcame North Macedonia 2-0 on Tuesday to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, with Fernandes scoring both goals.
