As an international free agent, Hernández signed with the Boston Red Sox in August 2013.
In 2014, he made his professional debut with the Dominican Summer League Red Sox, participating in 14 games and going 1–1 with a 2.89 ERA.
He returned to the DSL Red Sox in 2015, going 6–1 with a 1.10 ERA in 16 appearances. He has a 3–5 record with a 4.10 ERA in 14 games for the Class A Short Season Lowell Spinners in 2016.
Hernández appeared in 23 games with the Single-A Greenville Drive in 2017, going 4–5 with a 4.01 ERA.
Hernández appeared in 28 games with the Class A-Advanced Salem Red Sox and Double-A Portland Sea Dogs in 2018, amassing a 9–5 record and 3.35 ERA.
He participated in the Arizona Fall League after the season ended. Following the 2018 season, Hernández was added to the Red Sox’s 40-man roster.
Hernández was optioned to Double-A Portland ahead to Opening Day in 2019 after posting a 0.82 ERA in spring training, second only to Chris Sale.
For the first time, Hernández was added to Boston’s major league active roster on April 23, as the 26th man in a doubleheader.
