David Merritt is an NFL defensive backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs and a former linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals. In the seventh round of the 1993 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins selected him.
He attended North Carolina State University during his NCAA football career. Since retiring as a player, Merritt has also served as a coach at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga and Virginia Military Institute as well as the New York Jets.
He was a standout athlete at Millbrook High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he was inducted into the school’s inaugural Hall of Fame class (2012).
Merritt played linebacker for the North Carolina State Wolfpack from 1989 to 1992, receiving first-team All-ACC honors after leading the conference in tackles.
He was later picked in the seventh round by the Miami Dolphins in 1993, and he also spent three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.
He played for the NFL Europe’s Dusseldorf Rheinfire in his final season before transitioning to coaching, and they competed in the World Bowl Championship that year (1997).
As a defensive assistant/linebacker coach with the New York Jets (2001-2003), he worked under Head Coach Herm Edwards and Defensive Coordinator Ted Cottrell to start his NFL coaching career in the league.
