David Merritt is an American football coach with the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs.

When Did Dave Merritt Retire From Playing?

Dave Merritt announced his retirement from professional football in 1997 while playing for the Rhein Fire, an NFL franchise based in Germany.

His NFL career proceeded with the Miami Dolphins when he was drafted in the seventh round of the 1993 NFL Draft. He also played three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before being released in 1995.



In his final season as a player before turning to coach, he was a member of the Dusseldorf Rheinfire of the NFL Europe, which competed in the World Bowl Championship that year (1997).

The first three seasons of his NFL coaching career were spent as a defensive assistant/linebacker coach with the New York Jets (2001-2003), when he worked under Head Coach Herm Edwards and Defensive Coordinator Ted Cottrell.

Prior to joining the Jets, he spent two seasons coaching at the collegiate level, first as outside linebacker coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga (1997) and then as outside linebacker coach, as well as defensive ends and defensive line at Virginia Military Institute (2001). (1998-2000).
