In August 2014, Montero signed as an international free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals.

It was in 2015 that he made his MLB debut with the Dominican Summer League Cardinals when in just over half of the team’s games he hit .252 with three home runs and 30 RBI.

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals signed him in 2016, and he batted .260 with one home run and 26 RBIs in 61 games.

The Gulf Coast Cardinals signed him the following year, and in 52 games he hit.277 with five home runs and 36 RBIs.

A Midwest League All-Star in 2018, Montero began the year with the Peoria Chiefs.

At the end of August, he was promoted to the Palm Beach Cardinals after a season in which he hit.323/.383/.529 with 15 homers, 69 RBIs and 28 doubles.

He batted .286 with one home run and 13 RBIs in 24 games for Palm Beach.

The Midwest League selected Montero as its Most Valuable Player after the season ended.

When Montero got injured in April, he started the year with the Springfield Cardinals.

In May, he returned to the field but was placed on the IL at the end of the month again. In July, he was reassigned to active duty status.

Montero slugged .188 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs in 59 games with Springfield. Glendale Desert Dogs selected him to play in the Arizona Fall League after the season.

After the 2019 season, St. Louis added Montero to its 40-man roster. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, Montero was unable to play in a minor league game in 2020.

The Colorado Rockies acquired Nolan Arenado in a trade including Montero, Austin Gomber, Mateo Gil, Tony Locey, and Jake Sommers on February 1, 2021.

He was sent to the Hartford Yard Goats to begin the 2021 season. During the course of the season, he was elevated to the Albuquerque Isotopes.

He slashed .278/.360/.529 with 28 home runs and 86 RBIs in 120 games during the 2021 season, returning to the Isotopes for the start of the 2022 season.
