Ruckert, a four-star recruit and the second-ranked tight end in the 2018 recruiting class, was a wide receiver at Lindenhurst High School in New York but, after committing to Ohio State, had the right mix of size and receiving ability to play tight end for the Scarlet and Gray.

Ruckert caught a ball for 13 yards in his debut game as a Buckeye, but despite appearing in 12 of the team’s 14 games in 2018, that was the only pass he caught that year. Ruckert was awarded an OSU Scholar-Athlete after his first season.

Ruckert focused on honing his blocking skills between his freshman and sophomore years in order to play more often. He was the No. 2 tight end behind Luke Farrell in 2019, and it paid off as he participated in all 14 games.

Ruckert only had 14 catches that season for 142 yards and four touchdowns, indicating that the Buckeye passing attack did not frequently use him despite his presence on the field.

Following the campaign, Ruckert was once more recognized as an OSU Scholar-Athlete and was selected Academic All-Big Ten.
