During the 2012 season, Chacin made just 14 starts and logged 69 innings because of shoulder irritation.
Because of the team’s dismal play during his absence, the Rockies tried a four-man starting rotation with a pitch limit of 75 pitches, a strategy they kept even when he returned in August and which resulted in lower stats for each starter.
Chacin’s record was 3-5, but his ERA+ was above average for the third year in a row, with a 4.43 ERA translating into a 108 ERA+.
After the season, he was able to seek arbitration. On January 27th, he and the team reached an agreement on a two-year contract worth a total of $6.5 million.
