During the 2012 season, Chacin made just 14 starts and logged 69 innings because of shoulder irritation.

Because of the team’s dismal play during his absence, the Rockies tried a four-man starting rotation with a pitch limit of 75 pitches, a strategy they kept even when he returned in August and which resulted in lower stats for each starter.

Chacin’s record was 3-5, but his ERA+ was above average for the third year in a row, with a 4.43 ERA translating into a 108 ERA+.

After the season, he was able to seek arbitration. On January 27th, he and the team reached an agreement on a two-year contract worth a total of $6.5 million.

Jhoulys was also named a part of the Venezuelan national team for the 2013 WBC at the same time as this. Additionally, he made his first appearance for Caracas in three years, finishing 3-1 and posting a 4.04 ERA.

He had a stellar 2013 season, going 14-10 with a 3.47 ERA in 197 1/3 innings in 31 starts.

During spring training in 2014, the Rockies were dealt a blow when Chacin was forced to miss the last week of the season due to discomfort in his right shoulder.

That season, he threw just 11 innings, with a 1-7 record and a 5.40 ERA. During spring training in 2015, the Rockies surprised him by giving him his unconditional release in order to preserve some of the $5.5 million owed to him.

It was decided that he was unlikely to recuperate in time for the season, thus he was released.
