Ferguson grew up in West Jefferson, Ohio, and attended West Jefferson High School. In 2014, as a senior, he underwent Tommy John surgery.
Despite his injuries, he was selected in the 38th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers promoted Ferguson to the majors on June 6, 2018, and he made his major league debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He hit the first hitter he saw and went on to go 123 innings, allowing four runs on three hits with three walks, three strikeouts, and two hit batters.
With four scoreless innings out of the bullpen against the New York Mets on June 23, he earned his first career MLB win.
