The 2021 season of the Detroit Tigers is coming to an end. The club has less than 10 games left on its schedule and is nearly finished. It’s been a fun season, and it’s great to see some of the team’s younger players gain some playing time.

Matt Manning was one of the Detroit Tigers players that eventually earned his call in 2021. Since being called up in June, the 6-foot-6, 195-pound starting pitcher has made sixteen starts for the squad.

He may not have had an immediate impact, but he was able to get his feet wet and respond to some hardship.

While some Tigers fans appear to be jumping the gun and assuming he should be sent back to Triple-A, this may not be the case. The Tigers’ season is finished; he’ll have the offseason to refocus and be ready to go in 2022.

It is not the proper time to bail out Manning. While his velocity was down in 2020, causing him to take a step back in the minors in 2021 before making it to the majors, he was able to figure things out.

Manning still has some projectability and hope.

Manning’s big league debut did not go as planned, but he gradually improved. Manning went 4-6 in 16 starts, pitching 77 innings.

The former first-round pick out of high school in 2016 pitched to a 5.73 ERA and a 1.52 ERA, with no noteworthy numbers in traditional categories.

However, a few things jumped out when it came to what you saw with your eyes as a scout.

Manning was able to improve the movement of his slider, which he can fine-tune and work on under Chris Fetter’s guidance.

While he isn’t spinning it as fast as Jackson Jobe with a 3,000 RPM slider, he has made some improvements to the pitch.

His pitch mix still needs refinement, which will come when he establishes himself in the big leagues. The 6-foot-6 right-hander, on the other hand, has a strong attack angle, and his Baseball Savant profile was intriguing.
