Paul Goldschmidt

Goldschmidt was selected in the eighth round of the 2009 MLB Draft out of Texas State University, where he set the school record for career home runs.

In 219 at-bats, he hit .352/.487/.685 as a junior, with 18 homers and 54 walks against 29 strikeouts. Scouts admired his strength, but they were concerned about his 6-3, 245-pound frame.

Some thought he’d strike out too much against professional pitching, and right-handed hitting first basemen have to wow scouts to get drafted high. Arizona selected him in the eighth round for $95,000.

In the Pioneer League, he dominated pitching (.334/.408/.638), but doubters pointed out that the Pioneer League is a fantastic location to bat.

Many college sluggers excelled there but were unable to reproduce their success at higher levels.

In the 2010 Baseball Prospect Book, I acknowledged his excellent performance, but gave him a cautious Grade C pending more exposure to stronger pitching, having previously been burned by showy rookie ball numbers from college hitters.
