Juan Osvaldo Lagares plays center field for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Between 2013 and 2020, he was with the New York Mets. He won the National League Gold Glove Award in 2014 for his outstanding defensive abilities.

In Constanza, Dominican Republic, Lagares grew up in a chilly, mountainous environment. Lagares grew up playing softball due to a lack of baseball facilities and teams in the area.

His arm power has been attributed to his softball pitching experience. Lagares began playing baseball as a teenager. He was signed as a shortstop by the New York Mets after only seven or eight months of practice at a baseball academy.

On May 5, 2006, the New York Mets signed Lagares as an undrafted free agent.

In 2009, Lagares was assigned to the outfield from shortstop. In 2006, he was assigned to the DSL Mets, where he hit .255/.339/.412 with 18 extra-base hits, 33 RBI, and 12 stolen bases in 57 games.

Lagares was promoted to Single-A Savannah in 2007, when he hit.210/.262/.317 with 20 extra-base hits, 16 RBI, and 11 stolen bases in 83 games.

His 2008 debut, with Savannah, took place in late June, following an arm injury.

Lagares was sent down to Low-A Brooklyn in the middle of August after 46 games with Savannah. He hit.253/.284/.352 in 65 games, with three home runs and 24 RBI.

Lagares started the 2009 season with Savannah, however he missed the majority of the season due to a wrist injury suffered in late May.

After a rehab stint with the GCL Mets in September, he returned. He hit.266/.297/.323 in 53 games, driving in 14 runs and driving in ten.

He played with the Dominican Professional Baseball League’s guilas Cibaeas after the 2009 season (LIDOM).
