Austin Hedges is an American professional baseball catcher for the Cleveland Guardians of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres in 2015.

A year ago, MLB.com ranked Hedges as the minor leagues’ fourth best catcher. He began the year with the Lake Elsinore Storm of the Class-A Advanced Lake Elsinore League, where he hit.270 with four home runs in 66 games.

When he was promoted to San Antonio Missions in August, he hit.224 in 20 games, making him eligible for promotion to Triple-A. Additionally, in 2013, he was named to the All-Star Futures Game.

For the second year in a row, Hedges was invited to the major league spring training camp on an unofficial basis. Prior to the season, he was ranked 27th in Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects.

With San Antonio, he slugged.225 with six home runs in 113 games and threw out 38 percent of baserunners. Hedges made his Major League Baseball debut with the El Paso Chihuahuas in 2015.

On May 4, the Padres brought up Hedges as a back-up for Derek Norris, who had been designated for assignment.

In 79 at-bats with the Chihuahuas, Hedges hit.324 with two home runs. Hedges’ first Major League hit came on May 6 against the San Francisco Giants, when he singled for an RBI in the third inning.
