Drew Smith graduated in 2012 from Crowley High School in Crowley, Texas. He was 10-1 with a 1.90 ERA in 85 innings as a junior at Crowley in 2011.

He went to Dallas Baptist University and played college baseball for the Dallas Baptist Patriots after being undrafted out of high school in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft. Smith had a 3-2 record and 3.97 ERA in 25 outings for Dallas Baptist as a junior in 2015.

Smith was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays as the player to be named later in the Mikie Mahtook deal on April 28, 2017. [6] He was sent to the Charlotte Stone Crabs by Tampa Bay.

In early July, he was promoted to the Durham Bulls for one game before returning to Charlotte. He was promoted to the Montgomery Biscuits on July 18.

On June 22, 2018, the Mets promoted Smith to the major leagues. The next night, he made his major league debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citi Field, pitching one shutout inning in relief as the Dodgers beat New York 8-3.

He pitched in 27 bullpen appearances for the Mets last season, finishing 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA. Smith underwent Tommy John surgery during the 2019 spring training season, forcing him to miss the rest of the season.
